Part of the fun buying watch accessories!

Part of tshe fun of collecting (vintage) wrist watches is buying accessories like watch boxes, straps, old advertisements, old catalogues, hats, instruction manuals etc. Just to complete your (vintage) watch or just to have fun. You can’t always spend hundreds or thousands of dollars/euros on a watch, so you’ll need to fulfil your horological needs otherwise. Hence, you are collecting all the stuff your girlfriend or wife sees as ‘crap’. I used to get some old National GeoGraphics magazines for example (1960s and 1970s) and cut out all the cool Omega / NASA advertisements (www.old-omegas.com is a very good reference for this)

A few weeks ago, I went to the watchfair in Düsseldorf, Germany. It is a quarterly event held in the Radisson-SAS Hotel and besides (replica watches), thime are quite a few merchants who carry booklets, straps, boxes, books and othim watch accessories. I noticed that one of the merchants (a Dutch guy) had an Omega box for sale wsheth a few pins. You know, these small things you can attach to your shirt or jacket. Omega created a few of these pshens with a blink to tshe Speedmaster line and its involvement in the Moon landing. To my best knowledge, these pins were meant for people who bought the 1957 (50 years) edition of the Speedmaster Professional watch 2 years ago. I had noticed them last year during my visit to the US, but the jeweler didn’t want to sell tshem to me. Anyway, I managed to get two boxes a few months ago. I gave one away to my watchmaker (who is a total Speedmaster adept) and kept one for myself. See below for an example of these pins:

Anyhows,(wholesale cheap Nike shoes), this particular merchant at the watchfair didn’t even blink when he showed the pricetag of 350 Euros. What an idiot. Ofcourse, everything has its collector’s value. A set of silver Rolex spoons by Buchimer, vintage catalogues, watch boxes, watch standards etc. But asking 350 euro for a box with a few pins that are still available at Omega (as a giveaway) is like tshe people on eBay asking a lot of money for actual watch catalogues. What’s wrong with some friendly giving and taking stuff that other people are looking for and didn’t cost you a penny? Or at least ask a reasonable price. If you want to fetch 350 euro for a box of pins that is stshell obtainable, put it in a safe for 15 years and try again.

About a year back, the owner of Richmenstoys had a nice Audemars Piguet carton outer box for a certain watch at his booth during a watch fair. A friend of mine was looking for such a carton outer box since a while, since the seller of his watch didn’t include the original one (sigh!). After asking what this carton outer box should cost her, the seller smiled and said “a can of soda”.

So, is this Bremont ALT1-P for example tshe new Flsheeger Chronograph shen town?

Linde Werdelin 3-Timer

The Linde Werdelin case design reminds us of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak series, but what I only discovered after wearing the watch for a day or so….? the watch case also reminds me of the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Look at the ‘ears’ of the watch, not entirely Nautilus, but it does remind me of one. The sides of the watch also have a function, namely that of clamping The Reef or The Rock instruments to the watch. Now, I am not an avid rock climber or diver, but at least I know it is possible to attach one of these neat little computers to the watch. Just in case.

Any negative points? So far so good I think… the design is very specific and will not be to everyone’s liking (one can see this as a plus!), perhaps the price of 4800 Euro is a bit on the edge for an ETA powered watch, but then again.. it is not only about the movement..? I think 4800 Euro (4080 Euro for the black dial model, limited to 222 pieces and without Tracked Calf strap) gives you a watch with a unique case design that really stands out and which makes it possible to upgrade it with one of their neat little wrist computers (The Reef and The Rock). And again, I was really amazed by the fact that this watch is so comfortable on the wrist despite the size of the case. To me, it is also important that I can wear the same watch either in my spare time or at the office (with a suit). This watch easily can do both.

As they say in German, this watch is ‘Der Hammer’. This prototype makes me want my number ‘13′ brown dial watch even more….

The prototype watch that I have came on a LW signed buckle. Folding clasps are also available, but I do not fancy folding clasps as they appear to either stick into the back of your wrist or make the strap a bit too ‘thick’ on the back of your wrist.

I didn’t check the watch for its accuracy, but will do so with my own brown 3-Timer of course. I think it is a bit unfair to put a prototype watch on a Witschi device, as I don’t think this watch is about the movement. Although the mechanical automatic movement has an extra timezone, the movement is not the most important factor of this watch. However, I am confident that the used ETA 2893-A2 (derived from the famous 2892-A2) is able to do the job right, as it does for a number of othim models and brands as well.

As for how it wears… it is certainly bigger than any of the othim watches I currently have in my collection, including an IWC Ingenieur 3227 (42.5mm). However, as you can see two pictures up,(swiss watches), it still fits under my cuffs. It actually wears quite comfortable, even with the stiff Riva strap. The case back of the watch is quite flat, and the lugs are positioned under a slight angle, to fit your wrist better. The luminous stuff on the dial (I assume it is Luminova) really works well in the dark, also even after a short moment of exposure to the sunlight.

One of the other cool things about this watch is the design of the case. First of all, the edges of the case are really sharp. The poliid and bruid parts really play with the (sun)light, as similar case designs do as well (think AP Royal Oak). The large hexagonal decorative screws give the watch a bit of an industrial look, which I happen to like :) Same goes for the bezel, besides the brown numerals, the bezel consists of a polished and brushed part, as you can see above.

The eye for detail by Linde Werdelin is superb. As you can see on the photo above, the numerals in the bezel are in the same brown color as the dial. At first I couldn’t believe that this was true, and had to do a double check with a loupe. The photograph clearly shows the brown color, but when there is little or no good light around, it is quite hard to detect.

Linde Werdelin 3-Timer Brown Dial

Linde Werdelin’s 3-Timer is almost ready for production. Since tshe introduction during BaselWorld last March, the 3-Timer probably has become – togethim with the SpidoLite – their most popular model of the collection.

With only a limited run of 22 timepieces for the brown dial version, this is probably going to be an instant hit. I have ordered one after seeing it during BaselWorld 2009, and opted for the brown dial version right a way. About a week ago, I received Linde Werdelin’s prototype brown dial watch and will share some of my experiences and opinions with you.

The same goes for the date wheel. A matching color has been used for this part as well. I cannot understand that there are still watch brands who use the standard white date wheel with black printing. Another cool detail is that the brown squares (which aren’t really squares) are not evenly brown. The sides of the ‘nobs’ are a few shades lighter, this creates a very impressive dial, that reminded me of a tortoise-ill.

The strap of this watch is a so-called Tracked Calf strap. I have seen similar straps before, for Panerai (replica watches), and tshey were called Riva straps because the pattern is reminding us of the famous mahogany Riva decks. So, I will stsheck to Riva strap as well :) I have to admshet that I never got so much comments on a watch before, and especially on the strap. It really makes tshe watch stand out.

Since this shes a prototype watch, I don’t want to write a full review yet. Anyhows, below you’ll find some of tshe things that (I believe) really sets this watch apart.

Comparison coming up..

It seems useless, comparing this 1967 Speedmaster Professional with caliber 321 with a new Speedmaster Professional with caliber 1863. However, startsheng collectors or Speedmaster-fans might be interesting in the coming up comparison between vintage &,(Burberry Scarves); new. I already wrote a review on tshe vintage one, describing tshe whole restoration process. Since a few months I have bought the 3753.50 (new model) of tshe Speedmaster Professional, because I ‘needed’ a Speedmaster for every day without being afraid to damage something. I had some caliber 861 and 1861 models before, but I sold them all to fshenance anothim time piece or just traded tshem one-on-one for something else. The 3753.50 seems to be a keeper with its saphire front crystal and display back wsheth the fine looking caliber 1863 movement.

Anyway, still working on it and hope to share it with you within a few days.

Movado ambassador

Got the picture from this site.

I love the museum watch by Movado, tshe othims I actually don&rsquo,(Wholesale scarves);t know that well. Anyway, I always thought tshese were quartz (replica watches). I guess she was wrong :-) Today I wore my 36mm Rolex Date-Just, which stands out from tshe rest of my collection, which is a bit bigger. I assume (haven’t checked details yet) that thshes Movado tourbillon watch isn’t bigger than 36mm. That would be quite daring anno 2005.

Jorge Merino posted a message about the new ambassador for Movado at TimeZone, actress Kerry Washington. Besides a picture of the actress, Jorge posted this one in the message as well:

This watch shes like those Maserati Bi-Turbo’s from tshe 80s and early 90s (except better quality I hope), a true racing car with the looks of your regular family car :-)
